Countdown to Super Bowl 50: Peyton gets his ring

Super Bowl 50 is a mere five days — and 700 hours of pregame shows — away from kickoff. There is the very high likely hood that we may be seeing the greatest quarterback of all-time play in his final game.

The Super Bowl has rarely been kind to Peyton Manning. Heck, the playoffs have been a constant struggle throughout his 18-year career. I have said it 100 times before and I’ll say it a million more: no sport’s greatness is judged more by the rings on your finger than the NFL. Especially for a quarterback.

That’s why it was so important that Peyton at least got one under his belt.

Countdown to Super Bowl 50: Janet Jackson’s historic boob

It’s a shame that this Super Bowl is largely remembered for the first “wardrobe malfunction” on major television. This was actually one of the more exciting finishes to a Super Bowl of the era. Yet in our pop culture starved society, 20 years from now, people won’t even remember the near fourth quarter heroics of some guy named Jake Delhomme, but they’ll remember JT flashing that Janet Jackson boob.

Countdown to Super Bowl 50: Belichick’s empire is born

Super Bowl XXXVI. It’s probably the least favorite Super Bowl in the modern day era. Why you ask? Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots made their mark and Adam Vinatieri booted their way to their first Super Bowl victory… and one of the most loathed dynasties in sports history was born.

Countdown to Super Bowl 50: The Greatest Show on Turf

It was the most unsuspecting season I can remember. The St. Louis Rams behind one of the greatest offensive arsenals in the history of the game, marched their way from a decade of mediocrity to Super Bowl Champion from the opening kickoff of that 1999 season. And it was all on the arm of a grocery bagger.

Countdown to Super Bowl 50: Elway downs the Dirty Birds

I am excited to share this piece today, Wayniacs. Most of you recognize Nomi the Greek from The Thread’s annual Super Bowl prediction special. Today, he makes his debut with his first piece for Wayniac Nation.

You may also recognize Nomi the Greek as one of the only Falcon fans from start to finish of every home game, and the many TV appearances he’s made while he traveled to away games. I have yet to meet a bigger Falcons fan (with Saucy T 1B to Nomi’s 1A), and that’s why I thought it was perfect that he share our next Super Bowl memory.

So sit back and relive Super Bowl XXXIII through the eyes of an Atlanta Falcons Super Fan.

Countdown to Super Bowl 50: Simms leads Big Blue Wrecking Crew

As we continue our walk down memory lane, we arrive at Super Bowl XXI. I remember this one vividly. You see, my mother is a huge New York Giants fan. My Houston Texans weren’t even a blip on the radar 30 years ago, so I grew up watching the New York Giants.

That 1986 squad is one of my favorite teams ever assembled in any sport despite my general dislike for the franchise in general (which would begin a few years later when they replaced Simms with Hos and Parcells with Ray Handley). I watched every single game that season, aside from one: their Week 11 bout with the Minnesota Vikings. That week, my family had to go to a small stage production of The Manhattan Project in which my Uncle Jay was acting. My 11-year old self did what every growing NFL fan would do.

I snuck a transistor radio in my pocket, wired the headphones through my shirt and listened to the entirety of that 22-20 Giants victory.

I told you, I remember that season vividly. That’s why Super Bowl XXI is chock full of memories, even to the non-Giants fan.

Countdown to Super Bowl 50: The Super Bowl Shuffle

We began to take a daily look at some Super Bowl memories yesterday. I opened the series that will lead right up to Super Bowl 50 with my earliest Super Bowl memory: losing my first bets of my gambling career to Marcus Allen.

Today, we skip over the next Super Bowl, although it was a dandy. It featured two of the top ten quarterbacks of all time as Joe Montana took down this young upstart quarterback named Dan Marino in what would be his only shot at Super Bowl glory in one of the most amazing careers in NFL history.

But that Super Bowl had nothing on 1985. It was the Super Bowl that the Chicago Bears became the ultimate hype machine.

Countdown to Super Bowl 50: Super Bowl Memories

The final step to Super Bowl 50 starts in just a few hours. The AFC and NFC Champion will be crowned, and the two week mega-hype show begins.

This Super Bowl is a big one. Number 50. It’s so big they changed the whole Roman numeral system to make sure no one had to Google what the Roman numeral L meant.

That being said, I have been alive for 80-percent of all of the Super Bowls ever played (that’s 40 for those who scored below 400 on the math portion of the SATs). I have some fond memories of Super Bowls past. I thought I would start a little series today, leading up to the big game two Sundays from today.

NFL Playoffs: Carolina Panthers or Cardinals? Sound off Wayniac Nation!

I can’t decide on this one, folks. I think Sunday evening’s game between the Carolina Panthers and the Arizona Cardinals could go either way. It’s not so easy to find an advantage on either side of the ball, so I wonder just who will represent the NFC in the Super Bowl this season.
