The WN Fantasy Football Report: What to do with Melvin Gordon

If you are like me and drafted Melvin Gordon, you are ripping your hair out of your head. The question you have to be asking yourself now after last week’s disaster is what you do with him.

The problem with Melvin Gordon isn’t that he is struggling in a pretty high-octane offense. He is a rookie, and for every Adrian Peterson, there is a Ricky Williams (who ran for a lackluster 3.5 yards per carry and fumbled five times his debut season).

No, the problem was where he went in most drafts. I took him in the third round and when I did so, I screamed an expletive and made it known that I hated the pick by saying out loud I hate this pick. Why? Because when I think of Wisconsin record setting running backs, I think of Ron Dayne and Montee Ball. They didn’t translate very well to the NFL game, did they?

I went Dez Bryant with my first pick (11th overall) and Odell Beckham, Jr. with my second pick. I needed to lock down a back. There wasn’t much on the board anyway. I did pass over Chris Ivory, but was he a third round pick? I passed over Frank Gore, but snagged him in the fourth round with my comeback pick. The only real value I left out there was an injured Todd Gurley and Arian Foster, both a which I felt were too big of a gamble to invest in that early in the draft.

It turns out that Gordon was that same problem. My running back stable is not pretty, so I — like so many others — feel so compelled to start him, based purely on value of draft selection. Right now, that doesn’t matter, he is not playable.

Gordon bombed in his first game, rushing for a measly 3.6 yards a carry and fumbling. He looked impressive in his second game, totaling 88 yards on the ground on 5.5 yards a carry while adding a reception for ten yards, but since then it has been down hill. His yards per carry dropped over the next three games (3.6 to 3.2 to 3.8) and just when he looked back on track last week reeling off 4.1 yards per carry, he fumbled twice and was benched.

There is no way you can start him this week. The Raiders haven’t allowed 100 yards rushing since week one, and in two games, they didn’t even allow 50 yards. They have the number three rush defense in the NFL, and right now Coach McCoy is being vague in his comments surrounding the Gordon situation. You can be sure Danny Woodhead gets a healthy dose of the RB touches this week, with Branden Oliver sharing some passing down work. Gordon will see touches, but I can’t foresee him getting the same work load he has the past few weeks.

What about moving forward? It’s not too early to give up on Gordon, but I think there are some positives. He is the only true running back on the Chargers roster, so you can bet they want to see him succeed. Woodhead is a great back, especially in fantasy, but he is not an every down back. Gordon should have every chance to establish himself as a first and second down back again this season.

I think letting Gordon ride the pine until he has the eye opening performance is the best thing to do. Like I said, he isn’t in that undroppable category, but if you have room for him, stash him. He will get his chances to succeed, but even if he sees them this week, it is not a favorable matchup.

Watch out, gents. Fantasy Football is a ladies game now!

My wife is an avid fantasy football nut. I’m not talking about a woman who plays fantasy football. No, her entire Sunday is ruined if her team underperforms.

I have played in fantasy football leagues for close to 20 years, so to say I haven’t played in a league or two with a female in it would be a flat out lie. But today, it is a different game. Not only are there female-only fantasy football leagues, women are winning co-ed leagues with ease. I talk shop with Dan and Loraine — a couple in the same fantasy football league — weekly, and quite honestly, Loraine probably has one of the sicker keeper fantasy teams I have ever seen.

I decided it was time to see what makes these ladies tick, so I sat down with four of the most competitive female fantasy footballers I know in today’s random thoughts.

The WN Fantasy Football Report: Week 6 Starts and Sits

Let me tell you a little something about The Wayniac and fantasy football. For every genius play I pull, somewhere down the line I am still an idiot.

I was nearly perfect this week. I told you to start Eli Manning (who dropped 32 points), Devonta Freeman (who dropped 33 points), and Willie Snead (who dropped 21 points). I also reminded you that you drafted Antonio Gates to start and not to hesitate in getting him in your lineup this week, and hopefully he rewarded your starting team with his 30 points and not your bench. My Packers defense start was the top netting fantasy defense in several formats, so that helped as well. A perfect 5-for-5 in starts.

My Latavius Murray sit was right on as he wound up getting benched, as was my Owen Daniels sit who didn’t even secure one target. The Wayniac, however, bought the stats. In the wee hours of Sunday morning, I looked at the Raiders NFL worst defense against tight ends, and dropped Gary Barnidge to roll the dice with OD against the hapless Raiders. The Wayniac went against The Wayniac, and watched a goose egg from OD (which I originally projected) while Barnidge dropped nearly 30 points.

I also went against myself in the case of Josh McCown. I told you to sit him. However, my QB situation in one league is in complete disarray. Andrew Luck is my starter and Derek Carr is my backup. Luck was ruled out and there was no way (and rightfully so) was I starting Saucy T’s sit of the week in Carr (which he was correct on as well). So I picked up Kirk Cousins, but when DeSean Jackson and Jordan Reed we declared inactive I dropped him for Jay Cutler. When Alshon Jeffery and Eddie Royal were declared inactive, I dropped Cutler and picked up the top QB available… Mr. Josh McCown. He would be the number one scoring QB on the week and lead my team to a 212-point performance, third best in league history (incidentally, yours truly is number one AND number two as well — insert pat on back here).

We all make mistakes. I usually keep mine to one, so hopefully you took the other 90% of my picks to heart and won a few games this week.

The Cowboys, Raiders, Bucs and Rams are on byes. Luck, Julio Jones and a bevy of other superstars are highly questionable. Who do you turn to this week?

UPDATED: The WN Fantasy Football Report: The Martavis Bryant Dilemma

UPDATED: Below were my thoughts from Thursday night about the exciting return of Martavis Bryant to the Pittsburgh Steelers and fantasy football. It appears that since publication, Bryant has tweaked his knee, rather badly. All signs are indicating that he will be out Monday night, staying on the suspended/injury list, so this changes the entire focus of the point below.

It does not change my perspective of a healthy Bryant in the fantasy football world. Instead of pulling the article, I will leave it posted in the archives. Just PLEASE keep in mind that I no longer recommend waiting until Monday night to see if Bryant pulls off some miraculous recovery, and he should ride the pine this week.

From Thursday night:

A question was recently posed to me, so I thought I would address it in an open forum just in case any of my fellow Wayniacs are pondering what do do this Sunday.

That question:

Wayniac, do I start Martavis Bryant this week even with Mike Vick under center?

What do you do with Bryant’s return?

The WN Fantasy Football Report: week 5 start ’em and sit ’ems

And last week highlighted the emotional roller coaster that we call fantasy football. One week after nearly two dozen players registered 30 or more points, they all came crashing back to earth. One week after 180 points was getting you a one point win, you were hoping to sneak a victory out by scoring 90 points. This is the life we have chosen, folks.

How did we do?

Dunton and Saucy T were right that Derek Carr would make a nice bye week/injury replacement. I, myself, listened to their advice and was able to beat our own Wayniac Nation expert JD by starting Carr for Andrew Luck. Saucy T also nailed that Martellus Bennett, whose 24 point day crushed me in one league.

A bevy of running backs picked by our experts as sits played just as they said… poorly. Carlos Hyde‘s three points, certainly didn’t help anyone, while Joseph Randle‘s whopping eight points were quite the opposite of his three TD performance last week. C.J. Anderson has entered must sit territory and is now part of the dreaded RBBC.

I must admit how proud I am. The Wifeyiac knocked it out of the park as four of her predictions should have won you games. She told you Devonta Freeman was no joke and to start him and that Cam Newton, despite many thinking he would struggle with a depleted WR corps, is back to must start status. If you sat Matthew Stafford (as she and Teddy Ballgame advised) and Alfred Morris you did alright.

The Wayniac? I had an off week. My start of the week came through in a big way as Philip Rivers went off for 358 yards and three TDs. Unfortunately, Jeremy Hill snuck in the end zone three times to disguise the fact that he still isn’t running the ball very well at all, making my sit of the week wrong. I aso told you to start Jonathan Stewart, with the label that if he couldn’t get it done against the Bucs, he wasn’t gong to get it done. Well, folks, his five points led me to my only fantasy loss in my three leagues last week, so Mr. Stewart is not an advised start until further notice.

Panthers, Dolphins, Jets and Vikings are on a bye this week. So, who’s on the menu for fantasy football week 5?

The WN Fantasy Football Report: Week 4 starts and sits

Last week was a fantasy football… well, fantasy: high octane action and tons of points. My Fighting Blue Hose had four players combine to score more points than EIGHT other teams in my league. When Rishad Matthews is dropping 30 points, it is a great week.

Not every week is going to be like that, however, and with byes starting and this crazy run of injuries to big time players, it only gets harder. Especially when the leagues best QB and TE are on a bye as well as an RB by committee in New England that does nothing but score TDs.

How’d we do last week? Several of my experts said that Donte Moncrief should be your start of the week, and he performed well, returning to the end zone and clearly establishing himself as Andrew Luck‘s number two weapon. If you listened to Fee and started Tyrod Taylor, you wound up in great shape, as he is becoming one of the more exciting fantasy QBs in the league.

Speaking of Fee, he also told you to sit Megatron and Golden Tate, as well as the Eagles, which aside from a breakout performance by Ryan Mathews, were pretty solid picks. Some of the experts lucked out as their sits of the week Drew Brees and DeMarco Murray didn’t even see the field.

Yours truly crushed it. Nearly 30 % of fantasy footballers are still starting Colin Kaepernick and I told you not to be fooled coming off of a huge week in garbage time against a soft Pittsburgh defense. He didn’t even throw for 100 yards, but he did throw two TDs… to the Cardinals defense. Cam Newton came through as my start of the week in a big way, as did my other starts of the week Le’Veon Bell and Amari Cooper. I did miss and tell you to sit Jason Witten, which proved to me that no matter how hurt this guy is you start him. He’s that good.

So who do we have lined up for you this week?

Read on for Week 4’s starts and sits!

The WN Fantasy Football Report: Week 3 Starts and Sits

Last week was a wacky one in football. Jameis Winston and the Bucs pulled off a huge upset in The Benz, while Andrew Luck couldn’t find his way off of Revis Island. Both those events brought my Beat the Pooch Survivor Pool from 76 people to SIX. Fantasy was even harder to project.

JD did yet another fantastic job. He told you to start Terrance Williams who walked away with 18 points and to bench LeSean McCoy, whose 13 points are not acceptable for a first round RB1.

Teddy Ballgame must have been engulfed with his toddler, because his Johnson and Johnson picks were spot on, telling you that David Johnson was a good flex play and that Andre and Chris Johnson should remain on your bench.

My sit of the week, DeMarco Murray, couldn’t have been any worse, and despite finding the end zone, it still only gave Pierre Garcon 14 points, a number that two dozen WRs beat last week. My benching of the entire Broncos TE situation proved correct as well, as all three TE options combined for a mere 12 points. I did unfortunately tell you to bench the Jets defense, but who saw that coming?

Jarvis Landry and Greg Olsen were quality starts, but Drew Brees was a bust. I don’t think anyone expected what happened Sunday in NOLA so I get a pass. Saucy T nailed his Carson Palmer start, but did advise you to bench Tom Brady, which I did. Luckily, I had Ryan Tannehill and was still able to walk away victorious.

We are a few experts short this week, but that doesn’t mean we won’t bring you the same top notch advice. Who is in the Wayniac Nation’s crystal ball this week?

The new age of fantasy football in this morning’s Random Thoughts

Let me start by saying this. When it comes to the NBA and MLB, daily fantasy leagues on Draft Kings or FanDuel are the greatest thing since sliced bread. These geniuses have taken the long seasons of baseball and basketball that fantasy mainstays have endured for years, and made it possible for you to win on a nightly basis. It’s brilliant. You don’t lose interest, because instead of racking up points for an end result five months down the road, you have to be on your A-game every night of the week. It is highly addictive and so much fun that I am pondering leaving my fantasy MLB and NBA leagues entirely, and focusing on daily leagues in the future.

I am torn, however, in the weekly fantasy league experience for the NFL. I can’t tell if it is for me or not. I think it is a fantastic concept, but like many old foggies, I am a traditionalist and am having trouble adjusting to the new way of life in fantasy football.

Read on for Thursday’s morning thoughts

The WN Fantasy Football Report: Week 2 starts and sits

Man, what a Week 1. If you were lucky, you made it through with a victory. If you were even luckier, you didn’t have Dez Bryant, DeSean Jackson, Andre Ellington or some of the other bigger names in the fantasy world that went down to injury.

How did we do with getting you the right starts? If you started Chris Ivory, John Brown, Matt Ryan, and Jordan Cameron you are probably sitting at 1-0. If you started Davante Adams (which multiple experts here said he was a MUST start), Doug Martin or Golden Tate, well then we owe you better starts this week.

Several Wayniac Nation experts felt benching Frank Gore was the right move and boy were they right. We also nailed the bad weeks Justin Forsett, Andre Johnson and Joique Bell had in store. Unfortunately, we also thought Brandon Marshall, Ellington and Delanie Walker were in store for a bad week, but all three found the end zone.

This week, with some big injuries already in the mix, you want to dig deep. Nobody wants to fall into an 0-2 hole. Who do we have for you?

The Wayniac Nation Fantasy Football Report: Week 1 Starts and Sits

Finally, fantasy football is here! My merry band of experts are back to bring you the best advice on the ol’ information highway and it is FREE!

Last week, the WN Team brought you some predictions on this years best and worst out there, so hopefully you were able to grab a few of our sleepers, breakthroughs and MVPs in your draft. The next step is to get you your best team on the field.

Week One is so tough. You sat there for hours drafting a team… and then another… and if you are like me and my co-horts, most likely another. Anyone you drafted in rounds one through five are starting this week. You didn’t draft players in the Top 60 of football to ride the pine the first week.

But you still will have some question marks. Are there some sneaky RB2 plays out there? You know you have three solid options to use at flex and for the past three days, you have had each one of them in your lineup. Don’t worry, we got you covered.

This week is a crapshoot, because all you can do is base your questionable decisions upon projections and last year’s performances. That being said, you can still find some great plays to make sure you lock down a 1-0 start to your season.

Onward for Week One’s Starts and Sits!
