The man behind the suit: RIP Craig Sager

People will remember Craig Sager for a lot of things. Most will remember him as the quirky sideline reporter who wore the eccentric suits. Many will remember the past few years, in which he used his celebrity to become the face of fighting cancer. We all became a little #SagerStrong.

For me, and many people I still communicate with, he was the man behind Jocks and Jills. When I moved to Atlanta, I had no job. I walked up the street to this sports bar, pretty much THE sports bar in Atlanta back then, and began an adventure that lasted five years. To this day, it may very well be the most fun I ever had at a job.

Sure, there were a bunch of local athletes who opened it up with him, but from day one until Jocks Galleria was the last store standing, he always remained a familiar — and friendly — face to those who worked there.

It’s not like he was buddy buddy with every employee in all of the stores, but every time he popped in, I got excited to ask him about whichever game I saw him covering last. And he always had something to say. I mean, after all, he was Craig Sager. He would talk to anyone if they wanted to listen. He was like that with everyone, and scrolling down my Facebook feed today, it is evident.

My interactions with Sager were minuscule in the grand scheme of things, but enough to know that he was a good guy who liked to have his Bud Light and someone to share it with. The people he worked with for nearly 30 years at Turner, all of the athletes and coaches he interacted with, and of course his family, they are the ones really hurting today. All of the staff here at Wayniac Nation send our thoughts and love to the Sager family and friends.

Today the sports world lost a great personality, both on the television and off of it.

The WN Fantasy Football Report: Semifinals Starts and Sits

This season has been one of the most brutal in recent fantasy memory. Several teams went into last week’s playoff action missing many of the early round draft picks as injuries have ravaged the elite of the fantasy football world in 2016.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, this week a nasty winter storm looks as if it will play a major role in deciding which teams will play next week for the championship. It’s expected to be two degrees with a -17 wind chill in Chicago for a game featuring many Green Bay Packers highly relevant in fantasy. The Giants and Lions game is also expected to be blasted by the cold, leaving many question marks there as well.

Don’t worry. Our award-winning (and FREE) fantasy coverage has you ready for victory.

The NFL MVP Race: Let the debate begin

We are entering Week 15 of the NFL season. That is both hard — and sad — to believe, isn’t it? With the New York Giants beating the Dallas Cowboys and tightening up the NFC East and overall playoff picture, we are looking at one of the tightest races for divisions we have seen in a long time.

Which is both exciting and nerve racking.

Which also leads to a big pool of MVP candidates, seemingly larger than usual.

I called upon our guy Dunton who helps with The Wayniac Nation Power Rankings to help break down the NFL MVP race. We got more than a handful of names to throw in the mix.

The Wayniac Nation NFL Power Rankings: NFC up for grabs

I fought Dunton for the past three weeks. He was whole-heartedly convinced that the Oakland Raiders were the best of the AFC. I continuously pled my case that the New England Patriots are the best team in the NFL, and they have no reason to not be in the top slot.

Last week, we finally moved the Raiders into the top spot. And, on cue, they lost a big matchup, becoming the biggest fallers of the week (don’t worry, it wasn’t that far).

Remember, our Power Rankings break down the best five teams per conference until the playoffs start, in which it becomes a comprehensive NFL Power Rankings.

Who made the cut this week?

The Milwaukee Brewers Phil Bickford’s promising career put on hold

The Phil Bickford Story has certainly had its plot twists for a career that hasn’t seen a pitch thrown above A-ball. Twice a first-rounder after a stint at two colleges (and an amazing summer on the Cape), would see him excel across two levels of the minors in 2016. That sure is a lot of twos.

So, it should come as no surprise that Phil Bickford was suspended for a drug of abuse (meaning recreational). It’s the — you guessed it — second time Bickford has failed a league sanctioned drug test.

MLB Winter Meetings: Thoughts from Wednesday

The Chicago White Sox have had a nice 48 hours, haven’t they? A day after getting four solid prospects for Chris Sale, they sent Adam Eaton to the Washington Nationals for three more. Their top five prospects now rival anyone’s in baseball, and that says a lot.

Oh, and the New York Yankees went New York Yankees once again.

Keep reading for some quick thoughts.

The Boston Red Sox land Chris Sale in mega-deal at Winter Meetings

Dave Dombrowski doesn’t like to keep prospects around for too long. Despite it seeming that the Washington Nationals were ready to have a Max Scherzer and Chris Sale one-two punch atop their rotation as late as last night, the Boston Red Sox swooped in and now have a frightening Big Three in their rotation. Chris Sale changes the color of his Sox and is now atop a rotation that has David Price and the 2016 Cy Young winner Rick Porcello.
