The WN Fantasy Football Report: Who’s No. 1?

It’s that time of year, my fellow sports world Dungeon and Dragoners. Preseason football is underway, there are magazines on the super market shelves, and the Sirius/XM Fantasy radio station has nixed baseball and gone directly to all fantasy football all the time.

The good news is for those that have followed our growing fantasy network — with the top Starts and Sits each week, weekly player analysis and last season’s addition of FanDuel Fee breaking down DFS — are all back. Saucy T, J.D., Teddy Ballgame, Dunton, FanDuel Fee, The Wifeyiac as well as our other guest columnists have all signed on for yet another year of the best FREE fantasy football advice on the World Wide Intraweb.

Now that we got the niceties out of the way, let’s get to it.

Almost Mock Draft Revisited: The Atlanta Braves Ian Anderson

Yesterday, in revisiting May’s Almost Mock Draft, we took a look at the pitcher that many expected to go first overall, A.J. Puk. Puk of course slipped to No. 6 .

The debate about the top high school arm in the draft seemed to come down to Jason Groome or Riley Pint, and all eyes were on which one would go first.

The Atlanta Braves thought otherwise.

Dansby Swanson kicks off the new era of Atlanta Braves baseball

The Atlanta Braves have been a busy team the past two seasons. While they began their rebuild last season getting rid of the old and bringing in some of the new, they really haven’t been able to reap the rewards of their work, the fruits of their labor if you would. Today it all begins.

The New York Mets young strikeout king: Thomas Szapucki

Everyone likes a pitcher who strikes batters out in high numbers. Don’t get me wrong, watching a finesse pitcher like Greg Maddux control a game is a thing of beauty, but watching Randy Johnson chase 20 strikeouts in every performance is exhilarating.

That’s why the New York Mets prospect Thomas Szapucki caught my attention.

Corey Ray struggling in professional debut for the Brewers

In taking our look back at the first-rounders in this year’s Almost Mock Draft, the hitters that have been profiled thus far have gotten off to pretty solid starts. Mickey Moniak is hitting well for the Phillies, Nick Senzel is on a power surge for the Reds, Blake Rutherford is hitting everything for the Yankees, and Kyle Lewis was amid a mid-season turnaround before injury struck.

Today’s prospect is Corey Ray, who has not quite gotten off to the start his first-round cohorts have.

Kyle Lewis’ season may be done, but it was an exciting start

Moving on with our Almost Mock Draft Revisited series, we take a look at the player I felt was going to be the 1-1 in the MLB Draft. Although he wound up slipping 10 slots, getting drafted right outside the top 10, Kyle Lewis put together a college season to remember and was en route to a terrific debut season until injury ended it prematurely.

The Cincinnati Reds Nick Senzel is grooving in Low-A

Wednesday, we began our Almost Mock Draft Revisited series, taking a look at how 1-1 Mickey Moniak has fared thus far with his Philadelphia Phillies (spoiler: the answer is very well!). Today we continue the series, taking a look at the second overall pick this past June.

The New York Yankees Blake Rutherford out to a hot start

Today we continue on our look at Today’s Knuckleball Almost Mock Draft Revisited. The first two profiles highlighted the top pick in the MLB Draft — Mickey Moniak — and the second pick, Nick Senzel. Both have performed very well in their debuts. Blake Rutherford, however, who went outside the top ten, may be performing the best of the first rounders.

Almost Mock Draft Revisited: Mickey Moniak

Earlier in May, Today’s Knuckleball ran its first Almost Mock Draft, where I attempted to make some clarity of a wide open pool of players that made sense going in the top ten. Between talent, experience and bonus slot signing, no one player jumped into the spotlight as the clear cut overall number one pick in this past draft, making it one of the harder crops to choose from.

Today, let’s begin to revisit that Almost Mock Draft. Just how are those players doing thus far in their 2016 professional debuts?

MICKEY MONIAK
Almost Mock: No. 8 – San Diego Padres | Actual MLB Draft: No. 1 overall – Philadelphia Phillies

Moniak has arrived in a big way for the Phillies, quickly showing that they invested that first overall pick wisely. Despite being just 18 years old, he has quickly adjusted to the Gulf Coast League and should be nearing a trip to the New York-Penn League to take some licks with the Williamsport Crosscutters before the season ends.

Keep reading for more on Moniak.
