The New Houston Texans: the Brock stops here

NFL’s free agency period opened yesterday and almost immediately, many of the big names were taken off the board. The Houston Texans revamped their offense with three big moves of their own, signing Brock Osweiler, Lamar Miller and Jeff Allen.

Of course, my Twitter and text messages blew up instantly wanting to know how I felt about this. I had to sleep on it, but I think that overall, the Texans had a good day.

Did the Texans make the right moves? Keep reading to find out.

How good can the New York Yankees rotation be?

Earlier this offseason, we took a look at the top ten rotations heading into the 2016 MLB season. There were two teams that weren’t mentioned in the top ten, but were debated about back and forth several times.

One of those rotations is the Seattle Mariners. Any rotation anchored by Felix Hernandez immediately deserves top ten consideration, and Hisashi Iwakuma is about as much the model of consistency that you will find, although I am weary of his injuries last season. I like the young arms of Walker and Paxton, but Wade Miley as the No. 3 kept them right outside of the top ten.

The other rotation was the New York Yankees. Is it completely outlandish to think that this team can be a top ten rotation? It really isn’t.

So, how good can the Yankees rotation be?

The Atlanta Braves: The good and the bad of Spring Training… thus far

The first week of Spring Training is in the books and the Atlanta Braves are sitting pretty much exactly where people thought they would be. They are currently 1-4 in Grapefruit League action, but as we all know, what happens in Orlando isn’t necessarily about the wins and the losses, it’s about getting better.

So, are the Braves getting better?

What will be the legacy of New York Knicks Carmelo Anthony?

Kristaps Porzingis feel bad for him. New Yorkers are starting to get over him. Throughout his entire career, Carmelo Anthony has seemingly been expected to do so much more.

But at the end of the day, he simply hasn’t. As his 14-year career turns the corner into his twilight years, it’s time to wonder how he will be remembered.

Is Melo a sure-fire Hall of Famer? Keep reading to find out.

Roddy White and Arian Foster: Fare thee well

This has been one heck of an offseason for NFL veterans. Long time stalwarts and fan favorites are finding themselves without homes, at least for the time being. Mario Williams. Charles Johnson. Chris Clemons. Marques Colston. There are so many that NFL.com put out there Top 99 Free Agents list.

None are bigger or mean more to their franchises than Arian Foster and Roddy White.

More on White and Foster’s illustrious careers.

Is 2016 the Arizona Diamondbacks year?

One of two things will be said in September in the case of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The first may be, “Dave Stewart is a genius.” The other may be, “What a moron.”

Stewart had a very busy offseason, and his moves were questioned by many. That being said, the Diamondbacks’ GM clearly went for a win-now mentality, trading away two big pieces of their future to create some stability in the current pitching rotation.

Did he do enough to make them contenders?

Can the Diamondbacks make the playoffs in 2016? Keep reading to find out.

New York Yankees quick hits: let the Chapman debate begin

As everyone knows by now, the newest Yankees bullpen toy Aroldis Chapman has been suspended by Major League Baseball for 30 games without pay. While the decision seems to be split amongst Yankees fans, it appears to be heralded by the baseball community.

It’s hard to argue with Rob Manfred. He definitely got it right.

Is Chapman’s suspension justified? Keep reading to find out!

And the Sports Oscar for Best Picture goes to….

I have to say I’ve never been a big Oscars guy. One reason is my wife hates going to or watching movies, so until this year I hadn’t seen a nominated movie in like ten years. Another reason would have to be a result of how pissed I got that Pulp Fiction lost to Forrest Gump for Best Picture. I never watched after that until this year.

Two things led to my watching the Oscars with an intensity only surpassed by watching football. First, I recently invested in a beautiful, albeit totally illegal software that allows me to stream movies for free… many times while still in the theaters. I was able to watch almost every movie up for the major categories. Second, there was an office pool that I entered which made the Oscars SOOOO MUCH more fun to watch. I finished dead last by the way, but totally worth it.

It is in this spirit I present the Top Ten Sports Movies Ever Made. I could easily do Top 30 and I know there will be plenty left off the list, but the following are my ten favorite sports movies.

What are Ryan’s favorite sports flicks of all time? Keep reading to find out.

Manning, Kaepernick, Fowler and a week of false leads

This past week sports’ fans were subject to three huge stories. Dexter Fowler signed on with the Baltimore Orioles. Peyton Manning was set to announce his retirement. The San Francisco 49ers were set to trade Colin Kaepernick, and both the Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns were highly interested.

All reports were according to “sources”. None of the three proved to be true.

Why is being No. 1 so important? Keep reading to find out.

Former NBA and UConn star Scott Burrell excels as NCAA head coach

When you look at the annals of Connecticut sports history, perhaps no athlete represents his home state better than Scott Burrell. Burrell was a multi-sport super star at Hamden High School, turning down plans to go pitch at The U in favor of becoming one of UConn’s first legends in a long line of household names. He would become an NBA World Champion with the Chicago Bulls and then return home to become an assistant coach for Qunnipiac.

This season, he became a rookie head coach at Southern Connecticut State University. I was lucky enough to catch up with Burrell this week for NCAA.com and talk about his journey.
